A word of gratitude during the unveiling of the bust of General Sosabowski
Chairman Foundation Driel-Polen
18 September 2020
General Grodzki, Mayor, ladies and gentlemen
In September 2017, the first example of this bust of General Sosabowski was unveiled in Warsaw. Roughly three years later we are standing in Driel where, just now, the second example of the bust has been unveiled.
Both on historic locations.
In Warsaw, at the location where in some years time the renovated Polish Army Museum will be opened just 100 meters away from where the General had lived.
Here in Driel opposite the place which, in September 1944, for about five days was the General’s headquarters.
The board of the Foundation Driel-Polen is extremely grateful to the local council for this initiative and thanks the Historical Circle Driel for the suggestion to realise the placing of the bust on this site.
In the framework of the subsidy project Gelderland Herdenkt together with the four Airborne municipalities and the Liberation Route Europe (LRE) routes will be marked. With this action a long held wish of our foundation will be fulfilled.
Before the end of this month preparations will start on making the already described route in and around Driel. The route will link up with the so-called hikers trail the LRE brings to a large part of Europe. From England via France there are various routes via different countries that end in Poland.
This former headquarters in Driel is one of the most important points of our route.
We are convinced that in the coming years many visitors will begin with this route from the Information Centre so they can get more information about the contribution of the 1st Polish Independent Parachute Brigade to Operation Market Garden.
Thank you for your attention
